What day does the weekly ad change? Start days for 37 US stores
Published October 9, 2026
What day does the weekly ad change? At most US grocery stores, the new ad starts on Wednesday. We checked the valid dates that 51 chains publish on their own digital flyers, and 35 of them start the new ad on a Wednesday. The rest split between Thursday, Friday, Tuesday, and Sunday, and a few don’t run weekly ads at all.
Below is the full list, grouped by start day, plus what the day means for your shopping.
1. Wednesday: most grocery stores
Wednesday is the default. If your store isn’t in a table below, guess Wednesday and you will usually be right. Each of these ads runs Wednesday through the following Tuesday.
| Store | New ad starts | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| Kroger | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Aldi | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Safeway | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Albertsons | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Vons | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Pavilions | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Randalls | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Jewel-Osco | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Fred Meyer | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Food 4 Less | Wednesday | 1 week |
| H-E-B | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Meijer | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Winn-Dixie | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Lidl | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Sprouts | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Stater Bros | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Ingles | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Grocery Outlet | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Smart & Final | Wednesday | 1 week |
| Uwajimaya | Wednesday | 1 week |
Start days from the valid dates each chain publishes with its digital flyer, as collected on USA Weekly Ads. Kroger and Meijer are also confirmed by the company or trade press.
The Kroger family (Kroger, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less) and the Albertsons family (Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Jewel-Osco) usually run one schedule across their banners. Meijer is a recent switch: it moved its ad from Sunday to Wednesday in September 2025, so older articles that say Sunday are out of date.
2. Thursday and Friday: clubs and the Northeast
The second group is smaller, and it is where most people get caught. Shoppers who assume Wednesday arrive a day or two early and find last week’s prices still on the shelf tags.
| Store | New ad starts | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| Sam’s Club | Thursday | 1 week |
| Food Bazaar | Thursday | 1 week |
| Galleria Market | Thursday | 1 week |
| Ocean State Job Lot | Thursday | 1 week |
| Acme | Friday | 1 week |
| Shaw’s | Friday | 1 week |
| Stop & Shop | Friday | 1 week |
| Mitsuwa | Every other Friday | 2 weeks |
Start days from the valid dates on each chain’s digital flyer.
3. Sunday: pharmacies and dollar stores
CVS, Walgreens, and Dollar General start their weekly ads on Sunday and run through Saturday, the same rhythm as the Sunday newspaper insert these ads grew up in.
The practical upside: a Sunday pharmacy ad and a Wednesday grocery ad never change on the same day. Plan a pharmacy run for the weekend and a grocery run midweek, and every trip lands on a fresh ad.
4. Ads that run longer than a week
Not every “weekly” ad is weekly. A handful of stores run longer sales, and treating them as weekly means you either panic-buy or miss the window.
| Store | Starts | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| BJ’s Wholesale Club | Tuesday | About a month |
| Harbor Freight | Varies | Usually 2 weeks |
| Wegmans | Usually Tuesday | Often 2 weeks |
| La Michoacana Meat Market | Wednesday | 2 weeks |
| Bristol Farms | Wednesday | 2 weeks |
| Menards | Wednesday or Thursday, by region | 10 to 13 days |
From the valid dates on each chain’s flyer. Harbor Freight’s flyer and its coupon page can start a day apart, and Menards sets the length of each sale separately.
A two-week ad is good news. You get a second chance at the front-page deal, and the second week is usually calmer, since the shelf rush happens on day one.
5. What the change day means for you
Knowing the day matters for three reasons, and the last one is the one most people miss.
- Day one has the fullest shelves. Stores stock up for the new front page. By day six, the best loss leader may be gone and you are asking for a rain check.
- The last day is a deadline. If the old ad has something you wanted, the day before the change is your final chance. For a Wednesday store, that is Tuesday.
- Two schedules give you a fresh ad more often. Pair a Wednesday grocery store with a Thursday warehouse club or a Sunday pharmacy, and there is always a new flyer to check.
Bonus: set it and forget it
You only need to learn this once per store. Here is a two-minute setup.
- Pick your two or three regular stores and find each one in the tables above.
- Add a repeating phone reminder on each store’s start day: “New Kroger ad today.”
- Add a second reminder the day before for anything you are still waiting to buy at the old price.
- Open the new flyer when the reminder fires, and build your list from the front page.
Where to start
Find your main store in the tables, note its start day, and set the reminder now. If your store isn’t listed, its page on our site shows the exact dates of the current ad.
