Hispanic supermarket weekly ads: how to read the especiales
Published October 9, 2026
Hispanic supermarket weekly ads hide a second sale inside the first. The October 7 El Super flyer, for example, had a one-day produce sale on Wednesday and a separate three-day weekend sale, both printed on the same page as the weekly specials. Miss them and you pay more for the same avocados two days later.
This guide covers nine chains: when each ad starts, where the best prices sit, and the Spanish flyer words worth knowing.
1. Find your store’s weekly ad
These chains are regional, so the one near you depends on where you live. All of them start a new ad midweek.
| Store | Where | Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Vallarta Supermarkets | California | Wednesday |
| El Super | California to Texas | Wednesday |
| Superior Grocers | Southern California | Wednesday |
| Big Saver Foods | Los Angeles area | Wednesday |
| R Ranch Markets | Southern California | Wednesday |
| Fiesta Mart | Texas | Wednesday |
| El Rancho | Texas | Wednesday |
| La Michoacana Meat Market | Texas | Wednesday (2 weeks) |
| Food Bazaar | NY, NJ, CT | Thursday |
Start days from the valid dates on each chain’s flyer. Food Bazaar and La Michoacana run ads by store or by city, so check the dates printed on your store’s flyer.
These ads are short. Most run 2 to 4 pages, compared with 9 to 13 pages for a Kroger or Safeway ad. Less to read, but the best deals are packed tightly onto page one.
2. Start with the meat on the front page
Every front page we checked puts meat sold by the pound near the top, often marinated and ready to cook. Here is what the top of three recent ads looked like.
| Flyer | Front-page meat deal |
|---|---|
| Vallarta, Oct 7 to 13 | Pork stew meat (trocitos de puerco), $2.99/lb |
| La Michoacana, Sep 30 to Oct 13 | Boneless chicken breast, $1.99/lb |
| El Super, Oct 7 to 13 | Bone-in pork leg, $2.27/lb |
Prices from those weeks only. They change every week and can vary by store.
These are the loss leaders: items priced to bring you in the door. Build the week’s dinners around them, then fill in from the rest of the ad. If carne asada or ranchera is on the front page, that’s the weekend cookout sorted.
3. Catch the sale inside the sale
This is where these ads differ most from the big national chains. Many run short extra sales inside the weekly ad, and each one has its own dates printed in smaller type.
- Miércoles de frutas (El Super): a one-day produce sale on Wednesday. In the October 7 ad it was a full column of produce at 99¢ prices, from limes to onions, for that day only.
- 3 días ofertas de fin de semana (El Super): a separate Friday to Sunday sale at the bottom of the front page.
- Viernes pachanguero (La Michoacana): a Friday-only deal, with the valid Fridays printed in the box.
- Dollar deals (La Michoacana): a column of items at $1 to $5 for fixed counts, like 4 for $1.
The practical rule: when you open the ad, look for any box with its own dates. Those are the deals that expire before the weekly ad does.
4. Learn the flyer words
Most of these flyers mix English and Spanish, and some key terms appear only in Spanish. This short glossary covers what we saw on recent ads.
| On the flyer | What it means |
|---|---|
| Especiales de la semana | This week’s specials |
| Especiales quincenales | Two-week specials |
| Ofertas | Deals |
| lb. / por libra | Per pound |
| c/u (cada uno) | Each |
| pzs. (piezas) | Pieces, as in “4 pzs. x $1” |
| 2 x $5 | 2 for $5 |
| Cuando compre 2 | Only when you buy 2 |
| En una sola transacción | In a single purchase |
| Válido del … al … | Valid from … to … |
| Hasta agotar existencias | While supplies last |
| Ahorros digitales | Digital coupon savings |
| +CRV | California bottle deposit is added |
5. Plan around a two-week ad
La Michoacana Meat Market calls its ad “especiales quincenales”: it runs two weeks, from a Wednesday to the Tuesday thirteen days later. That changes how you shop it.
- No rush in week one. The prices hold for 14 days, so you can split your meat buying across two trips and keep less in the freezer.
- Short deals still expire early. The Friday specials and dollar deals inside the ad have their own dates.
- Compare against a weekly store. If you also shop at a Wednesday store, check its new ad in week two. A better price on one item may turn up.
Bonus: a 5-minute weekly routine
- Open your store’s ad on Wednesday (Thursday for Food Bazaar).
- Pick one or two front-page meats and plan dinners around them.
- Note any boxes with their own dates: a produce day, a Friday deal, a weekend sale.
- Clip the store’s digital coupons if it has an app. El Super prints “ahorros digitales” right on the ad.
- Shop the produce day if your store has one, and the meat deals any day that week.
Where to start
Find your chain in the table above and open this week’s ad. Look at the front-page meat and check for any boxes with their own dates.
